Light as a Feather at Lough Boora Discovery Park
“ Light as a Feather” explores the paradox of weight and lightness, transforming steel into a form that appears to float effortlessly above the canal. Suspended in such a way that it never touches the water, the sculpture relies on reflection and shadow to complete its presence, shifting as the light and currents change. Its placement within the environmental sculpture park is central to the work: the canal, framed by willow and birch, situates the piece in a landscape of renewal. Once a cutaway bog, the site now offers a dialogue between human intervention and natural reclamation. Within this setting, “Feather” becomes both an object and an atmosphere—an emblem of balance, fragility, and the possibilities of coexistence between sculpture and environment.”

The Light as a Feather series is a striking minimalist sculpture by Irish artist and sculptor Kevin O'Dwyer, gracefully suspended above the Silver River. Designed to float visually above the water’s surface, the elongated feather shape casts shifting reflections, creating a poetic dialogue between metal, light, and nature. Evoking the themes of lightness, freedom, and transformation, the sculpture draws inspiration from the natural movement of feathers in air and water. As part of O'Dwyer’s site-responsive practice, the Light as a Feather series invites contemplation of the river’s flow and the delicate balance between the physical and the ethereal. Perfectly at home in both contemporary sculpture parks and natural landscapes, the work embodies O'Dwyer’s signature fusion of minimalism, craft, and environmental awareness.
